How to Ensure Your LinkedIn Profile is Found in Google

How to Ensure Your LinkedIn Profile is Found in Google With more than 225 million business individuals now on LinkedIn, there is a growing trend to ensure that a LinkedIn profile is not only created professionally, but can also be discovered by search engines such as Google. As a result of the public nature of the majority of users’ LinkedIn settings, an increasing number of individual profile pages are appearing in search engine results â€" particularly when searching for, validating or screening the information and expertise of potential candidates. LinkedIn advise that in order to ensure your profile is displayed in search engines like Google, Bing Yahoo, your profile can be made visible by adjusting your settings, sending out at least one invitation to a business colleague or friend and adding as a minimum, one connection. In order to ensure your profile is visible you will need to amend your settings. The process should only take a couple of minutes and can be found by going to your profile avatar (picture) in the top right corner and choosing ‘Privacy Settings’ as an option. Here you can amend who can see your profile picture (‘Change your profile photo visibility’ and ensure your settings are ‘Everyone’) and ‘Edit Your Public Profile’. Users have a tick list of profile content which you can opt for everyone to see. Additional Sections: LinkedIn recommend users to ensure their profile is updated regularly (at least every month if you are wanting to be top of results), as well as checking all additional sections have been correctly filled in.  These sections include: Attaching a headshot as your profile photo  This should be a professional business photograph. Users should remember that all profile images are searchable on search engines, especially in Google Images. Therefore care should be taken on the choice of image used, perhaps choosing to reflect a corporate element for a business networking site here are 7 pictures you should NEVER use. Completing your Headline  This is the wording which is shown next to your profile picture and name on LinkedIn. Some people like to customise this to fully reflect your role and act as an aide to stand out from your competitors its shown as a summary in all search results. Here are 10 LinkedIn Headlines that stand out from the crowd. Writing a short description to include in the Summary box  This is similar to a summary of a CV and is meant to be a couple of paragraphs detailing you and your role make sure you spruce it up! Adding industry specific key words under your job history  If you work within a business sector which has unique industry key words, recruiters will search on those requirements and therefore your profile will show in search results. Entering each of the skills expertise you possess  This acts as an additional section to add industry specific skills. Care should be taken however to ensure that you only accept skills from individuals endorsing you which are relevant to your business area. As LinkedIn are constantly changing and updating their offering, a number of optional areas have recently been introduced to complete such as: Projects: The option to complete the project name, date, project URL, description and to add all team members relating to that project. This feature could be useful if you are a contractor and working regularly on project-based work. It could be an excellent way to demonstrate the structure, workflow and expertise required for the project. Languages: You have the ability to enter any other languages spoken and the degree of fluency of said language. This could be beneficial if you are interested in moving to work overseas. Publications: Individuals utilise this section to mention any publications or editorials written, including the title, publisher, publication URL, and ability to add any other authors. If you work within a niche business area and have written publications on your areas of specialism, this will give recruiters and hiring companies’ visibility of your knowledge and expertise within your industry. Organisations: If you belong to any industry organisations, there is the option to enter the organisation name, position held, occupation, time period and any additional notes. Again, for a recruiter this is very useful especially if you were to work within a niche industry or sector.   It will help position your profile as a stronger match on any keyword searches being carried out by recruiting companies. LinkedIn also gives you the option to add honours awards, test scores, patents, certifications and any volunteering causes you work on. If you want to be discovered by recruiters on LinkedIn, you should ensure that you have completed the following checklist: Is your profile being kept up to date? Have  you entered all the relevant information to your current job? Have you completed your skillset? Have you ensured that both your profile and picture are visible to ‘Everyone’? And finally and perhaps most importantly, ensure the contact details in both the contact box and your profile are visible and up to date. 5 Reasons I Left My Corporate Job to Build My Career as a Writer

5 Reasons I Left My Corporate Job to Build My Career as a Writer The following is a guest post By Jaime Boust.  Her bio follows. I was tired of working towards someone else’s goals. My twenties were all about city life, newfound freedom, and scant responsibilities. I was working my way up the ladder, making good money, and I had a VP in my title.  All of which conspired to convince me that I was fulfilled. But as I approached thirty, I realized that time moves quickly. That dream of being a novelist someday was at risk of remaining just that, a dream. I had a choice: continue selling my time to work towards someone else’s goals or sacrifice security for a shot at something bigger, something mine. When I looked at it this way, my decision was clear. My job clashed with my values. Turning thirty forced me to take inventory of everything that wasn’t working in my life and change it. It’s something everyone goes through. It’s astrological, and it cannot be denied. For me, it was all about aligning my work with my values. I was spending my days marketing companies whose products I felt ethically opposed to. I was contributing my precious time and energy to something I didn’t believe in. And I could no longer ignore it.  I wasn’t doing what I loved. The goal of life is happiness, and a life comprised of love and fulfillment is what leads you there, nothing else. We live in a world that tries to convince us that status, beauty, and possessions bring fulfillment.  But it’s not true. Fulfillment comes when we work to develop our abilities and character, pursuing goals that align with our values and purpose. The theory goes that money flows from there. My corporate job was not a source of fulfillment. I wasn’t doing what I loved. I wanted to be a good role model for my kids. “You can be anything you want to be.”  My parents said that to me, and I would most definitely say it to my kids one day.  The problem is, most people who teach this to their children aren’t living that truth. I wanted to be different. I wanted to be proof that if you set your mind to something, you can achieve it through hard work, passion, and commitment. I imagined what it would feel like for my future kids to look to me as an example of someone living their dream.  That those wordsâ€"you can be anything you want to beâ€"would actually mean something if I was doing exactly what I wanted to.  Writing is what I’m meant to do.   Most people make the mistake of thinking that if they haven’t found their passion by now, they must not have one. Passion is something that grows over time. For me, writing was always there in the back of my mind. So it was how I imagined myself as a grown-up. But it wasn’t until I took the leap and started pursuing my dream that true passion developed. Today, eight years after leaving the corporate world behind to build my writing career, I honestly feel like I would die if I couldn’t write. That’s how much it’s a part of me. It’s what I’m meant to do. Jaime Boust Jaime Boust is a writer whose work ranges from literotica to magical realist alternate histories. Some of the Most Incredible National Parks in the US

Some of the Most Incredible National Parks in the US Nothing brings a family together quite like a road trip through some of the most precious natural spots across the US. Then again, avid nature lovers swear by solo camping trips to see many sunsets in silence, enjoy a hike through the woods, while newlyweds increasingly opt for in-nature escapades instead of the traditional cocktails at the beach for their honeymoons. Some, if not all of the national parks found on this list are likely already on your own bucket list, but in case you’re looking for new must-see destinations this expansive country has to offer, look no further than our little collection. Most are ideal for the classics such as hiking, camping, and kayaking, while others are also home to unique adventures such as whale-spotting and scenic aerial excursions. Without further ado, let’s delve into the beauty and wilderness of some of the most mesmerizing national parks the US has to offer. Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska Proving that size doesn’t matter and that even the smallest park in the state of Alaska can pack quite an adventure punch, Kenai Fjords National Park is a glacial fairytale brimming with activities and wildlife. Its fearless headlands meet the Gulf of Alaska in all of its untamed glory, while the elongated fjords and serene coves provide refuge to many a wild creature. This is a true personification of paradise for those who love the relentless frost of winter and summers teeming with life all crammed into such a small, yet vibrant package. Enjoy a gentle boat ride among the seals in one of the park’s lagoons, snap some photos of glaciers, and camp on the shores with a view of the waves. Grand Canyon in Arizona Cradled in the timeless deserts of Arizona, this stoic giant of a park spans across 446km in length, offering some of the most picturesque, breathtaking vistas imaginable and unimaginable alike. The incalculable shades of copper, scarlet, and orange command the views as far as the eye can see, while the hidden emerald and azure alcoves take a little more effort to discover. For starters, choose one of many adventurous Grand Canyon helicopter tours to scout numerous areas and all of their majestic palettes of fiery red. That is one of the most memorable trips to give you a unique vantage point of this beast of a national park. Then, look for a tranquil little cocoon on foot such as the Havasu Falls for a dip in fresh water far away from the crowds. Wherever you look, there’s another photo-perfect spot waiting for your keen eye. No matter how you put it, Grand Canyon has it all. Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado While this one may not top many lists in a popularity contest, this secret jewel of Colorado definitely provides ample opportunities to explore, have fun, and simply be in pure awe of its ever-changing beauty. This strange slice of sandy land hidden amidst wetlands and tundra in North America can provide you with one of the most challenging hikes to the top of one of the tallest dunes in the park. Then again, if you’re up for rekindling some childhood memories with a sandy twist, try sand sledding â€" yes, it’s a thing! If you spend the night, you’ll have the privilege of seeing the Milky Way unobstructed by city lights, and enjoying a unique fiery sunrise in the morning. Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska We’ll never grow weary of talking about Alaska’s many natural treasures, and adding one more national park precisely from this state to the list is a perfect homage to its beauty. This particular wildlife sanctuary is also a safe harbor for 9000 years of human history, a living, breathing proof of how we can and should preserve the harmony of natural wealth and all of its inhabitants. Fun fact: did you know that there are more bears than people in the state of Alaska? Katmai National Park is the finest example of this environmental balance, as this is one of those few places in the world where people flock for a very peculiar and extraordinary activity: bear watching. Thriving in their natural habitat, surrounded by plenty of food sources, and mostly undisturbed, these bears welcome you to enjoy their pace of life. Of course, all of the viewing is done under ranger supervision and with their guidance. Zion National Park in Utah Thrill-seeking spirits among you will love the idea of hiking in Zion Canyon, especially in its most famous nook, known by the name of The Narrows. As the name suggests, this challenging stretch of the canyon provides a truly up-close experience of exploring Mother Nature’s most marvelous spots. You’ll take the upstream rout of the Virgin River and pass through exceptionally narrow gorges that will take your breath away. The walls surrounding you on this arduous journey can get over 300 meters high, so brace yourself for some views to completely overwhelm your senses. Add to that, you’ll be able to take a scenic ride through the park, and enjoy many lighter hikes through equally stunning trails. With so many national parks to choose from, there can be no such thing as a poor choice when you need to settle for a single park as your road trip destination. Make sure to add some of these to your vacation itinerary, and you will be inspired to spend even more time away from the cities and explore the natural heritage of this beautiful country.

How to Keep your Balance and Sanity After Maternity Leave - Classy Career Girl

How to Keep your Balance and Sanity After Maternity Leave How to Keep your Balance and Sanity After Maternity Leave A lot of people say they dread Monday morning. I’m not usually in that camp, but I will be next Monday. Next Monday!!! How is it here already? Where did those 12 weeks go? How can I leave her already? What if she doesn’t take her bottle? How on earth am I going to get out the door on time? You see, next Monday, my second maternity leave ends and my life as a mom/parallelpreneur begins! My head is swirling, and my emotions threaten to come pouring out. The past 12 weeks were exhausting in the most glorious way. Lucky for me, adjusting to life as a Mom of two under two has been easier than being a first-time Mom, but that’s only because our second sleeps like a champ whereas her brother did not. Now, as for next Monday, this is what I’m in for: Tears, and lots of them. A Stressful Sunday Night. I remember running around like a maniac at night because getting out of the house in the morning with little ones is no joke. I remember the stress of trying to prepare somewhat healthy meals, squeeze in some exercise, nurse an infant and sanitize bottles and pumps. Now add to the mix working on my new business and trying to make sure the worlds pickiest two year old eats something, and is in bed at a decent hour.  Will I even have 5 minutes to sit and chat with my hubby or play with my son? A physical and logistical challenge. Not only from running around Sunday night (see above) but honestly I don’t how many trips up and down the stairs it will take to get my toddler, my infant car seat, diaper bags, purse, laptop bag and breast pump into the car. Wait, am I forgetting something? Exhaustion. Even with an 11-week old sleeping queen, I am tired. I know some people think maternity leave is nothing but snuggles and naps. What they don’t realize is that when you have two kids, it’s not so easy to sleep when the babies sleep. Not to mention, with my exciting new venture into entrepreneurship, my mind is going around the clock, so I’m pulling longer hours than usual. It’s exhilarating, but it is exhausting. Anxiety. About leaving the two of them and feeling like I’m missing out. About telling my boss about my business. About having enough time. About being a good enough wife, mom, employee and entrepreneur. [RELATED: 5 Secrets to Reduce Stress While Growing Your Business] All this said, I am lucky that I have done this before. And just like bringing baby #2 home was easier than the first time around, I’m hoping that ending maternity leave #2 will also be easier. Here is the advice that I keep repeating to myself: 1. Acknowledge Your Emotions There are going to be a lot of them, and it is okay and to be expected. Acknowledge them and accept them. 2. Practice Self Care Keep exercising. You feel better when you do, and it actually does give you more energy. Plus, it will help you feel less guilty about those chocolate chip cookies. 4. Remember Balance Does Not  Mean Perfect Remember that wise dancer mompreneur’s advice when she said balance simply means not falling over. It is not perfection. Repeat this over and over because you are a perfectionist and you have to let this go. [RELATED: How to Ease Back Into Work After Maternity Leave] 5. Be Kind To people in general of course, but most importantly be kind to yourself. You don’t have to be supermom. You are doing your best. You are enough! 6. Ask for Help; Especially at Night You are blessed if you have a hands-on and supportive partner. Lean on him/her. Lean on your mother.  Lean on the girls. And super important: if said emotions from point 1 are too much to handle, lean on professional support. 7. Be Present When at work, be at work. When entrepreneur-ing, be an entrepreneur. Most importantly, when it’s time to be a wife or when it’s time to be Mami, be a wife and a mom. Put down the phone, stop worrying about clients and enjoy where you are. You will not get these beautiful days back, so be present and enjoy them. 8. Breathe Theres a Breathe app on the Apple Watch, and its super useful. Deep breaths really help. Okay, I’ve got this. Or at least I think I do. Now, soak up baby snuggles and toddler giggles a little bit longer.

Top 5 Career Books that have Nothing to do with Careers [Updated] - Career Pivot

Top 5 Career Books that have Nothing to do with Careers [Updated] - Career Pivot Top 5 Career Books You may wonder which books I recommend to my clients or what I have been reading. It may surprise you that none of the books I am going to recommend from my list are conventional career books. Let’s get started. Note this post was originally published in October of 2015. It was updated in April of 2019. #1 on Career Pivot Career Books List Necessary Endings: The Employees, Businesses, and Relationships That All of Us Have to Give Up in Order to Move Forward by Henry Cloud While endings are a natural part of business and life, we often experience them with a sense of hesitation, sadness, resignation, or regret. But consultant, psychologist, and best-selling author Dr. Henry Cloud sees endings differently. He argues that our personal and professional lives can only improve to the degree that we can see endings as a necessary and strategic step to something better. If we cannot see endings in a positive light and execute them well, he asserts, the “better” will never come, either in business growth or our personal lives. In this insightful and deeply empathetic book, Dr. Cloud demonstrates that, when executed well, “necessary endings” allow us to proactively correct the bad and the broken in our lives in order to make room for the professional and personal growth we seek. However, when endings are avoided or handled poorly â€" as is too often the case â€" good opportunities may be lost, and misery repeated. This book has been life-changing for myself. It is one of the reasons that my wife and I now reside in Ajijic, Mexico. It got me to question why we were still living in Austin, Texas, a city that had changed extensively since I moved there in 1978. #2 on Career Pivot Career Books List Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain. The book that started the Quiet Revolution At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introvertsâ€"Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniakâ€"that we owe many of the great contributions to society. This has been a life-changing book for several of my clients. It has given them permission to be themselves within a corporate environment. It also gave a name to something I have been recommending to my clients for some timeâ€"a restorative niche. I am writing this post as part of a restorative niche. Listen to the most recent episode #3 on Career Pivot Career Books List Positive Intelligence: Why Only 20% of Teams and Individuals Achieve Their True Potential AND HOW YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOURS by Shirzad Chamine In his popular Stanford University lectures, Shirzad Chamine reveals how to achieve one’s true potential for both professional success and personal fulfillment. His groundbreaking research exposes ten well-disguised mental Saboteurs. Nearly 95 percent of the executives in his Stanford lectures conclude that these Saboteurs cause “significant harm” to achieving their full potential. With Positive Intelligence, you can learn the secret to defeating these internal foes. This book is about identifying and naming your saboteurs. Once you have done that, you will be more aware of when they pop up in your thinking. Even if you do not read the book, I recommend you take Shirzad Chamine’s Saboteur Assessment. Many in the Career Pivot online community have either gone through the author’s program or are working through the book. #4 on Career Pivot Career Books List Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success by Adam Grant For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But today, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. It turns out that at work, most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return. One of the most important concepts I extracted from this book was weak ties. Weak ties are those people you do not know well…those people with whom you only have a casual relationship. Those relationships are invaluable in managing your career because they run in different social and professional circles. WOW…this concept proved invaluable to a 59-year-old client this year who harvested lead after lead from his weak ties. #5 on Career Pivot Career Books List Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less byGreg McKeown Have you ever found yourself stretched too thin? Do you simultaneously feel overworked and underutilized? Are you often busy but not productive? Do you feel like your time is constantly being hijacked by other people’s agendas? If you answered yes to any of these, the way out is the Way of the Essentialist. The Way of the Essentialist isn’t about getting more done in less time. It’s about getting only the right things done. It is not a time management strategy, or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution towards the things that really matter. By forcing us to apply a more selective criteria for what is Essential, the disciplined pursuit of less empowers us to reclaim control of our own choices about where to spend our precious time and energy â€" instead of giving others the implicit permission to choose for us.Essentialismis not one more thing â€" it’s a whole new way of doing everything. It’s about doing less, but better, in every area of our lives.Essentialismis a movement whose time has come. A good example of how this book can be used is in the post Learning to Say “No” and Not Feeling Guilty. Many of the concepts from this book can be applied in your everyday life. Career Books List With all of these books, I have either listened to them via Audible.com or read them on my Amazon Kindle device. In the last year, I have become a huge fan of Audible.com. You can blame my son for that! You will find these books and others that I recommend on my resources page on this website. Let me know what you think. Do you have recommendations for me? The 5 Secrets that Guarantee Networking Success - CareerEnlightenment.com

The 5 Secrets that Guarantee Networking Success Anyone who’s ever tried to further their career or grow their business through networking knows how challenging it can be. Naturally shy people, in particular, can have a lot of trouble approaching people, but chances are each of us could use a helping hand when it comes to boosting our own professional networks. So here are five time-tested tips to help you get the most out of your connections and build a future that you can be proud of:1. Remember that online and in-person networking are two very different beastsThese days there are a lot of online networks that cater to professionals, from iconic ones such as LinkedIn to more niche sites such as Xing and Meetup. Online networking offers numerous advantages, including the ability to delay your responses and the option of reaching out to multiple people at once. But it lacks the ‘human touch’ of in-person networking, which is why many people still prefer to meet and discuss things the old-fashioned way. However, keep in mind that there are different rules on how you engage people. At an in-person networking event, you need to take the time to really connect with every person of interest. If you just brush them off in an effort to reach as many people as possible you stand a good chance of seeming cold and aloof. Likewise, try not to get too excited whenever you talk to someone online. Wait until you actually meet them before you form a strong opinion.2. Know which places to go toNot all net working opportunities are created equally. Before you decide to attend a particular event or conference, be sure to research what people have to say about previous editions. Sometimes the asking price might be too high, or the speakers invited might not exactly light the world on fire. Also, you want to make sure that you’ll be surrounded by professionals from your industry of choice. A good way to do this is by signing up to courses that attract like-minded individuals. For example, there are a ton of online courses available that focus on specific markets such as Australia, thereby allowing you to stay up-to-date with what your fellow nationals are studying. Want to Read More Articles Like This One?Sign up here to receive weekly updates from Career Enlightenment, and never miss another powerful job searching tip! SUBSCRIBE! Keep your work and private life separateDue to their social nature, networking sessions can often resemble the time you spend with your friends and acquaintances. And indeed, some connections do blossom into full-blown friendships. But don’t make the mistake of assuming that everyone you encounter is destined to become a true friend. For this reason, refrain from showing off personal pictures or sharing compromising stories about yourself. Your private life should stay private, and your focus should be solely on what you can offer as a professional.4. Don’t ask for a job, ask for informationYour main goal when it comes to networking lies in building a good rapport with every person you encounter. While some of these connections can result in job opportunities, going into any discussion with the expressed hope of being offered a position is bound to make things awkward for everyone. The idea here is to get your name out there and impress people with your skills and personality, not to hound them for a position at their company. If you do your job right, offers may very well come your way afterward. And even if they don’t, you will at least have established some connections that may prove useful in the future.5. The rule of reciprocityThis is a big one. Contrary to what some people assume about networking, it really isn’t just about what you can get, it’s also about what you’ve got to offer. Every person that you meet has a story behind them, and you may find that you could play a significant part in some of them. In fact, I’d even go as far as saying that you should help others first. A true professional will recognize this as a sign of strength, and will often return the favor sooner or later. That concludes our quick overview of the five best things you can do to expand and nurture your professional network. With time and dedication, you too can harness the power of the people around you for mutually-beneficial gains. Even if some things may seem difficult in the beginning, keep in mind that networking is primarily a skill and one that you’ll get better and better at the more you practice it.

Tips For Creating a Resume For Yourself

Tips For Creating a Resume For YourselfOne of the most crucial parts of resume writing is creating a resume for your potential employer. Resume writing becomes increasingly important as time goes by. A candidate with the best qualifications can be well on his way to getting the job of his dreams if he could bring enough about his work history and professional achievements to impress his prospective employer. An employer can easily judge your capacity by the quality of your work experience, as it shows your performance and the quality of your work. The next element of resume writing is the contents of the resume. You need to have a solid foundation in writing a good resume if you are serious about getting the job you want. In the initial stages, you may feel that creating a resume for yourself is a daunting task. However, as you move on and you find how easy it is to create a resume for your prospective employer, you may find yourself falling prey to some clichés and pitfalls in resum e writing. There are ways through which you can save yourself from these traps.First of all, prepare a list of the job requirements of the job that you are interested in. What is the main role of the position that you are looking for? What is the role of the position that you are applying for? In order to look at your resume in its entirety, go through the job description of the position that you are in as well as those that you wish to be in. It will help if you include your job title and job responsibilities in the resume as well. You need to work out this element of resume writing if you want to take the right step in creating a resume for your prospective employer.Once you have finalized the details of the job requirement, the next step in creating a resume for yourself is to make a list of relevant achievements in your career. Make sure that the resume is filled with content and consists of the keywords that can be used to generate a competitive edge in the job market. The major mistake that people often make when it comes to resume writing is to look for ways to maximize the content to the maximum and ignore the key words and key phrases. Most of the time, these key words and key phrases are not as important as the content may not speak for the job requirement. Avoid this pitfall in resume writing and get the job done without having to waste precious words and that too with less success. The final tip for creating a re sume for yourself is to make sure that you make use of the power of the internet to make your job easier. There are various online companies and firms that can be helpful in your quest to look for your dream job. A search engine can be used to locate these companies and firms that can help you. These firms and companies will guide you in finding a job and in providing you assistance in resume writing. However, you will need to check with your potential employer first. There are many elements of resume writing that you need to know and get used to. Remember that the goal of making a resume for yourself is to take care of your career development and get the job of your dreams. Be an entrepreneur and use the internet to get in touch with potential employers.
